Wi-Fi Blueprint MAC Address Type — Device MAC ID Forced Configuration Not Universally Supported; Lenovo-Only on OS 12+

If you're configuring Wi-Fi networks in Esper Blueprints and need to enforce a specific MAC address type on your devices, you should know that forced Device MAC ID configuration has limited OEM support. This article explains the limitation and shows you how to work around it.

Understand MAC Address Type support

The MAC Address Type field in Blueprint Wi-Fi settings lets you force devices to use their hardware MAC address instead of a randomized one. This is useful for MAC-based network access control, DHCP reservations, and enterprise Wi-Fi allowlisting.

However, this feature is only supported on Lenovo devices running Android 12 and above. Other device manufacturers have not implemented the required Android enterprise managed configuration keys to support this setting. If you deploy a Wi-Fi Blueprint with MAC Address Type → Device MAC ID to non-Lenovo devices, the setting will not be enforced.

Before you begin

Identify your device specifications:

• Device make and model (for example, Siyata SD7)
• Android OS version

Check if your device is supported

1. In the Esper Console, go to Blueprints → [Your Blueprint Name] → Network → Wi-Fi.
2. Look for the MAC Address Type field.
3. If you have Lenovo devices on Android 12 or above, you can set this field to Device MAC ID and it will be enforced.
4. If you have other device makes or models, this setting is not supported and will not be enforced on those devices even if you configure it.

Work around MAC address limitations on unsupported devices

If your devices are not Lenovo Android 12+, try these alternatives:

• Check for OEMConfig support: Some device manufacturers publish OEMConfig profiles to managed Google Play. If your device model has one, it may include a MAC address enforcement option. If available, you can surface it through Apps & Configuration → Managed Configurations in Esper.
• Configure your network infrastructure: Instead of forcing MAC address behavior on the device, adjust your Wi-Fi access points or network switches to handle MAC randomization. For example, you can enable WPA3 or disable per-network MAC randomization at the access point level if supported.

Verify MAC address configuration

After you apply any configuration, confirm that your device is using the correct MAC address:

1. On the device, go to Settings → About Device → Wi-Fi MAC Address and note the hardware MAC address.
2. Check your network switch or Wi-Fi access point's connected client list to see which MAC address the device is using to connect.
3. Alternatively, run this ADB command to check the active interface MAC:

adb shell ip link show wlan0

The MAC address shown should match the device's hardware MAC address from Step 1. If it differs, MAC randomization is still active.
