Cannot type spaces in Esper Console fields — browser cache or extensions
Android
When you try to type a space in an Esper Console text field—such as a device name, message box, or dialog—the space either does not register or is silently dropped.
Why this happens
Browser extensions, corrupt cache data, or conflicting cookies can intercept the spacebar keypress before it reaches the Console's input handler. This is a local browser environment issue and has no effect on your devices or your Esper tenant.
Steps to resolve
-
Clear your browser cache and cookies. Stale or corrupt cache data is the most common cause. Use the steps for your browser:
- Chrome: Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data. Check Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data, then select Clear data.
- Edge: Go to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Clear now.
- Log out of the Esper Console, close the browser fully, then log back in. Reopening a fresh session ensures the cleared cache takes effect and reloads the Console's input handlers cleanly.
-
Disable all browser extensions and retest. Extensions such as password managers, clipboard managers, Grammarly, and accessibility tools are known to intercept keypress events. Navigate to your browser's extension manager and toggle off every extension:
-
Chrome: Go to
chrome://extensions/and disable all extensions. -
Edge: Go to
edge://extensions/and disable all extensions.
-
Chrome: Go to
- Test in a different browser with no extensions installed. Open the Esper Console in Mozilla Firefox or Safari with a clean profile and no extensions. If spaces work there, the issue is isolated to your original browser or profile rather than the Console itself.
-
Test from a different machine or network. Try each of the following to narrow down whether the issue is local to your machine:
- A different machine on the same network
- A different machine on a different network (for example, a mobile hotspot)
Verify: Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Details and edit the device name to include a space—for example, Test Device 01. Save the change. If the name saves successfully with the space intact, the issue is resolved.
If this doesn't resolve it
If spaces still do not register after completing all steps, collect the following before contacting Esper Support:
- A HAR log captured while reproducing the issue: In Chrome, open DevTools (F12) → Network tab → click the record button → reproduce the missing-space behavior → right-click the Network tab and select Save all as HAR with content.
- Any errors shown in the Console tab of DevTools at the moment the space fails to register.
- Your browser name, version, and operating system.
- Whether the issue occurs in only one Console field or all text fields.
Contact Esper Support with these details so the issue can be investigated further.
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
