QR Code provisioning fails with "Error Enrolling your endpoint to Google EMM": complete Google Play EMM binding before provisioning
Android
When you attempt QR code provisioning on an Android device, you may see the error Error Enrolling your endpoint to Google EMM. This error indicates that your Esper tenant hasn't completed the required Managed Google Play binding. This article explains how to resolve this issue and successfully provision your devices.
Before you begin
Check whether your tenant has completed Managed Google Play enrollment:
- In the Esper Console, click your account menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Go to your tenant settings.
- Look for the Android Enterprise / Managed Google Play section.
If this section is missing or empty, your tenant is not yet bound to Managed Google Play. You must complete this binding before any device can be provisioned using QR codes or other managed provisioning methods.
How to set up Managed Google Play enrollment
- Open the Setting Up Managed Google Play Enrollment guide.
- Follow the Google Play for Work Enrollment for New Users (legacy) method described in that article.
- Open a private or incognito browser window before starting enrollment. This prevents Google account session conflicts, especially if you're signed into multiple Google accounts.
- Complete the enrollment process in that window.
- Return to your tenant settings in the Esper Console and verify that the Android Enterprise / Managed Google Play section now appears with a bound account.
How to retry provisioning
- Once the Managed Google Play binding is complete, attempt QR code provisioning again on your device.
- If the device already has a failed enrollment state, perform a factory reset first.
- Complete the provisioning flow from the beginning.
- Verify that the device enrolls without errors and appears in Devices & Groups with a managed status.
Troubleshooting
The Android Enterprise / Managed Google Play section is present, but provisioning still fails:
- The issue may be related to the QR code payload, device hardware compatibility, or an expired Managed Google Play token. Contact Esper Support and provide a screenshot of your tenant settings and your QR code configuration.
You're provisioning a non-standard or OEM-specific device (such as a digital signage tablet with custom firmware):
- Confirm whether the device supports Android Enterprise Device Owner mode. Provide the exact manufacturer name, model number, and Android version to verify compatibility.
You have a custom or AOSP-based device that may require an unsigned Supervisor Plugin APK:
- Contact Esper Support with the device's exact make, model, and Android version. Esper can generate the appropriate APK before you retry provisioning.
Your tenant cannot complete the Managed Google Play binding:
- Contact Esper Support to arrange a screenshare session for assistance.
Key points
- The Managed Google Play binding is a one-time setup for your tenant. Once complete, all future provisioning attempts will succeed (assuming no other issues arise).
- Always use a private or incognito browser window during EMM enrollment to avoid Google account conflicts.
- Devices that do not support Android Enterprise Device Owner mode cannot be provisioned via QR code or other managed provisioning methods.
- The Managed Google Play binding is required for all managed provisioning methods: QR codes, Zero-Touch Enrollment, KME, and Android for Work.
Still need help?
If you've completed the Managed Google Play binding and provisioning still fails, submit a support ticket. Include a screenshot of your tenant's Android Enterprise settings and details about your device and QR code configuration.
