Remote Viewer on iPad shows screen view only — remote control (touch input) is not supported on iOS/iPadOS

Title: Remote Viewer on iOS/iPadOS shows screen only — touch control not supportedWhen using Esper's Remote Viewer to monitor an iPhone or iPad, the device screen is visible but touch input, gestures, and all other remote control actions are unavailable.
Why this happens
Apple's iOS and iPadOS do not expose APIs that allow third-party MDM solutions to inject touch events or control the user interface remotely. This is a platform-level restriction enforced by Apple, not a limitation of Esper's implementation. Screen viewing is supported because it uses a separate, Apple-permitted API.
Confirm Remote Viewer is working as expected
- Open the Esper Console and navigate to Devices & Groups.
- Select the managed iPhone or iPad from the device list.
- Select the Remote Viewer tab.
- Confirm the device screen is visible in the viewer. If the screen displays correctly, Remote Viewer is functioning as expected for iOS/iPadOS. Remote control options will not appear and cannot be enabled.
What to do if the screen is not displaying at all
If no screen image appears in Remote Viewer — not just the absence of control inputs — check the following:
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info and confirm the device status shows as enrolled and active. An unenrolled or partially provisioned device will not stream its screen.
- Navigate to Devices & Groups → [Device Name] → Device Info → Compliance and verify the Esper MDM profile is installed and accepted. If the user dismissed the profile prompt during setup, screen viewing will not function.
- Check the Activity Feed for the device to identify any provisioning errors or profile installation failures.
Alternatives if your workflow requires remote control
If full remote control is required, consider the following options:
- Use Android or Windows managed devices — Esper's Remote Viewer on Android and Windows supports full remote control, including touch input, swipe gestures, and hardware key simulation.
- Use Apple's native tools — Apple Remote Desktop provides native remote management capabilities for Apple devices within a macOS-integrated environment.
If this doesn't resolve it
If the device screen still does not appear in Remote Viewer after verifying enrollment and MDM profile installation, contact Esper Support with the following information:
- Device serial number
- Provisioning method used (DEP, manual enrollment, etc.)
- Screenshot of the Compliance view showing MDM profile status
- Any errors visible in the Activity Feed for this device
Still need help?
If the steps above don't resolve the issue, submit a support ticket with your device model, Android version, Esper Agent version, and a description of what you've already tried — this helps the support team investigate without a follow-up.
