Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) configuration, also known as Rugged Device Configurations lets you set up scanners and other data capture peripherals on your devices through a blueprint. Use this method to apply DataWedge and OEMConfig settings consistently across your device fleet, rather than configuring each device manually.
Ask the Support team or your Esper contact for Rugged Device Configuration access.
Available OEM Manufacturers:
- Zebra
For fleets using Android 10 and below and 11+:
- The blueprint should only be applied to devices using the same OEM Config version. Create separate blueprints for Android 10 and below and Android 11+.
There are several ways to set up AIDC devices in the Esper console. Choose the method that suits your workflow and requirements.
- No upload. Set up via configurations.
- Upload the configuration
- Select a file from Content Management

Zebra Configuration
Pre-configuration
Choosing the right app
You will choose the Zebra app based on the Android operating system version:
- Zebra OEMConfig Powered by MX supports Android 11+.
- Legacy Zebra OEMConfig supports Android 11 and below.
You will need to create separate blueprints of your devices for devices that are above Android 11 and below 11.
OEM Config
If you plan to set the OEM configurations in the blueprint, you can download a supported version from Zebra’s official website.
Zebra rugged device configuration
In a Blueprint Manager, select a blueprint or create a new one and then go to Rugged Device Configuration.
Then select Zebra as the OEM manufacturer.
You’ll then see options for configuration.
You have the options for configuring the device:
- Upload the DataWedge configuration: Upload the db file from your computer.
- Select a configuration from Content Managements: If the file is already uploaded to Content Management, you can select the file from the content list.
- None: Continue with the other configuration options.
Upload or Select the Data Wedge file
Choose Upload/Select from Content Management and select the file from your computer. Maximum file size 4 GB.
Upload the file, then select the destination path where the DataWedge file will be stored on the device. Alternatively, select the already uploaded file from Content Management.
None
If the db file already exists on the device, or if there is an alternative way you will add it to the device, select None.
OEM Config
Enable additional configuration options by toggling OEM Config on.
Select the OEM Config version.
This version must be compatible with the Android version of your devices.
OEM config option
You have the option to configure the rugged hardware experience from the blueprint or via another method.
If you choose to configure via the blueprint, the OEM configuration application will need to be installed on the device in order for the configurations to take effect. Retrieve a supported version from Zebra’s official website. Once uploaded to the Esper console via App Management, you can set its state to Post-Provisioning to ensure that devices onboarded with that blueprint apply the configurations successfully.
You have the options for configuring the device:

Troubleshooting
The DataWedge app says it isn’t ready.
Sometimes, the device requires a reboot even after successfully converging for the first time. If you still notice this behavior, and you’ve applied additional configurations as well, you’ll need to install the OEMConfig application on the device.
The scanner doesn’t respond but there are no errors on the event feed.
There are a few reasons for this. One reason could be that the DataWedge app is set to disabled.
To resolve this, ensure the Zebra datawedge app (com.symbol.datawedge)’s app state is not set to disabled. Configuration changes will not be applied for apps in the disabled state. You can manage this app’s settings in the same blueprint when you set the other configurations.
In the same blueprint where you configure the Zebra configuration, add the preloaded application.
Then, set its state to a non-disabled state.
You can also set this setting at the individual or group level.
I updated my blueprint to use a new OEMConfig schema, but the device isn't reflecting the new configuration. Why?
This can happen when the OEMConfig app update hasn't finished installing on the device yet.
When OEMConfig is distributed through Google Play, Esper Agent does not wait for the Google Play update to complete before continuing the converge lifecycle if the app is already installed on the device. If your new schema is tied to a newer OEMConfig version, applying that schema has no effect until Google Play finishes updating the app on the device.
For example, suppose a device has OEMConfig version v1 installed, and v1 supports schema s1. If you update the blueprint to apply schema s2 (introduced in OEMConfig v2) and converge the device, Esper Agent applies s2 immediately without waiting for Google Play to finish updating the app to v2. Until that update completes, the device still has v1 installed, which does not support s2.
Where can I find additional information about known issues?
See Zebra’s website for additional issues and troubleshooting.
